While the Mac Mini and MacBook Air continue to have an easily defined place in the portfolio, the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 sits awkwardly.
Launching alongside the Apple Silicon-powered MacBook Air and Mac Mini in 2020, the entry-level MacBook Pro enables Tim Cook and his team to promote the new ARM-based M1 platform as everything to everyone, with a desktop, a consumer laptop, and a pro laptop, all available at launch. However the range of devices tested matches the M1’s powered portfolio, so it’s a fair assumption that what we’re seeing is an essentially “same again but slightly bigger” upgrade path.Īnd that means Apple’s clumsy MacBook Pro will be with us for another two years.
